How do I know if I need a Grease Trap?

If the food you cook produces FOG (Fats, Oil, grease) in any step of the process (Processing, Cooking, Serving, etc), there may be a need for Grease Trap. Also, if the waste that contains Oil, Grease, or Fats through the sewer by washing them down the pipes, there is a need for a fat filter.

How to select the right size of a Grease Trap?

Size of your trap is directed by the gallons of water that drain from your sewage (Known as Incoming Flow). Your grease filter’s rated capacity should be double the flow rate of water from the drain. For instance, if the rated capacity of your sewage is 30 gallons in a minute (30 gallons flow from the drain in one minute; Gallons per Minute, GPM), the fat filter you need should have a capacity of 60 Pounds.

For accurate measuring, take help of a Grease Trap Sizing Tool.

What is a Grease Trap Sizing Tool?

It is a kind of product choosing guide, based on your Fat separator’s maximum Flow rate and the added fixtures to it, if any and also the storage capacity which is formed on the type of food, customers that visit per day, pump out frequency, Serveware, etc.

Can I install a Grease Trap by myself?

Ideally, an expert or a plumbing professional should be called to avoid any misalignment and malfunctioning of any kind.

What is the sterilization schedule to clean a Grease trap?

The cleaning time of your fat filter is determined by its size, the usage, capacity, dishes cooked per day, use of the oven, etc. It also varies as per the season, business need, and functions or events organised in that duration. Remember the ground rule: If it seems dirty enough to wash, clean it!

Is servicing of a grease filter expensive?

A regular servicing of the traps is reasonable than replacing or repairs of it. However, the servicing cost will differ on the basis of its size and the frequency of its cleaning. If necessary cleaning is done at the required time period, servicing charges may be less than the case otherwise.

Can I dispose of all the grease through the trap as per its function?

Fats and oils should never be degraded in the sink as it will turn solid while it will flow from the pipes and will cause blockages and residues there. This disposal has an adverse effect on the plumbing and sewage system of the area or the city you are living in. The function of a fat filter is to collect the leftover FOG from the cooking.

How to determine if the trap installed is functioning fine or not?

The most common way to inspect is to see whether the FOG is not entering your sewage disposal and the plumbing system. If you suspect any kind of blockages, contact a trustworthy professional who can come and conduct thorough evaluation of it.
